Cleft Palate Babies And Adults

Cleft palate is a congenital anomaly (babies are born with it). Babies are born with an incomplete palate resulting in communication between the oral and nasal cavities (mouth and nose). This may or may not be accompanied by a cleft in the upper lip. This causes significant patient disabilities manifested as difficulty in speech and swallowing. Prosthetic rehabilitation is usually required for babies until the palatal defect is closed surgically. In rare cases, surgical closure might not be possible. Prosthetic rehabilitation will therefore be the only choice for adults.
